Where to Stay
The 10 Most Luxurious Caldera Suites in Santorini with Private Infinity Pools
Santorini sells "private infinity pool" on hundreds of listings. Perhaps thirty of them mean a pool you can actually swim in, unobserved, facing the sunset. These are the ones worth the money.

What "private infinity pool" actually means here#
Santorini invented the image: a rectangle of still water apparently falling off a cliff into a flooded volcano. It is now the island's single most powerful marketing asset, and the language around it has eroded accordingly.
Three phrases do most of the work, and they are not equivalent.
"Private pool" means the water belongs to your suite and nobody else may use it. It says nothing about size, and nothing about whether people can see you in it.
"Infinity pool" means the water has at least one vanishing edge. On a cliff that is easy to achieve with a pool two metres wide.
"Plunge pool" is the honest term for most of them, and the one that quietly disappears from the hero image caption.
The ten
Grace Hotel Santorini, Auberge Resorts Collection
Imerovigli - caldera front
The most imitated pool image on the island, and the suites behind it hold up. Service is the genuine differentiator: Auberge runs this property at a standard most of the caldera does not attempt. Pool suites look directly at the sunset with Skaros Rock in frame.
Perivolas
Oia - northern cliff
Restored cave dwellings carved into the rock, owner-run for decades, with a famously restrained aesthetic - no gold, no gloss. The main infinity pool is the island's original. A handful of suites have their own private water.
Canaves Oia Epitome
Oia - inland Epitome site
The largest private pools in Oia, because the site is not clinging to a cliff. Villas here are family-sized with step-free access and real outdoor space. You trade the vertical caldera drop for a pool you can genuinely swim lengths in.
Andronis Luxury Suites
Oia - caldera edge near the castle
Cave-cut suites with plunge pools hanging over the drop at the sunset end of Oia. The position is the product: you are two minutes from the castle without having to stand in it.
Andronis Concept Wellness Resort
Imerovigli - caldera front
The most contemporary of the Andronis properties and the one built around wellness rather than around the photograph. Larger suites, serious spa, private pools with uninterrupted caldera frontage and noticeably more space per guest.
Cavo Tagoo Santorini
Imerovigli - caldera front
Mykonos design language on a Santorini cliff: dark stone, sharp lines, generous water. Several suites have pools at the upper end of what the caldera allows. More social and more styled than the cave-suite tradition.
Mystique, a Luxury Collection Hotel
Oia - southern edge
The most textural property in Oia - raw volcanic rock, bleached driftwood, deliberately dim interiors. Plunge pools rather than swimming pools, but the setting does more work than the water does.
Katikies Chromata
Imerovigli - caldera front
The Katikies group's Imerovigli property, and the better-value route into that brand's aesthetic. Classic whitewashed terraces, adults-only, with private-pool suites at the lower edge of the cliff.
Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort
Megalochori - inland
No caldera view at all, and on this list for exactly that reason. Built around a 400-year-old winery, with genuinely large private-pool villas, mature gardens and a sense of enclosure the cliff cannot offer. The caldera is a 15-minute drive when you want it.
Astarte Suites
Akrotiri - south-west cliff
The contrarian pick. Akrotiri looks at the caldera from the opposite side, which means you see Oia and Imerovigli lit up at night rather than being in them. Private pools, far fewer people, and rates well below the northern villages.
The privacy problem nobody photographs#
Santorini's villages are terraced: each row of buildings sits on the roof line of the row below. It is what makes the place beautiful from a distance and awkward up close.
In practice this means a meaningful number of "private" pools are visible from the walkway above, from a neighbouring terrace, or from the breakfast area of the hotel next door. Nobody is leaning over a railing watching you, but a pool you feel self-conscious in is not the pool you paid for.
Two reliable signals:
- Suites at the bottom of a property's cascade are usually the most private, because there is nothing below them and the angles from above are steep.
- Corner suites at the end of a terrace run often have a blind side.
Ask for both when you enquire. Properties know exactly which of their suites are overlooked, and the good ones will tell you.
Plunge, swim, or swimmable#
A rough way to calibrate expectations before you look at a single photograph:
| Type | Typical size | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Plunge pool | Around 2 x 3 metres, waist to chest deep | Cooling off, sitting in, the photograph |
| Large plunge | Around 3 x 5 metres | Floating, a few strokes, two people comfortably |
| Swimmable private pool | 6 metres and longer | Actually swimming; rare on the cliff, common inland |
The cliff-edge properties in Oia and Imerovigli are mostly in the first two rows. The inland and Epitome-style sites are where the third row lives. Neither is better. They are different products sold with the same four words.
When to book, and for when#
Santorini's luxury season runs roughly late April to late October, and the pool suites behave like a scarce asset rather than a hotel room.
How to time it
For July and August, book by the previous autumn
Peak-season private-pool suites in the best properties are frequently gone nine months out. If you are set on a specific suite at a specific hotel, this is not a market where waiting helps.
For the best value with the best weather, target late May to mid June
Warm sea, long light, meaningfully lower rates and far fewer cruise passengers than peak. Confirm pool heating for this window.
For the quietest caldera, go the second half of September
The water is at its warmest after a full summer, the island exhales, and rates fall from the August peak. Our preferred time to be there.
Book the transfer at the same time as the suite
Santorini has famously few taxis. A pre-booked car with a named driver removes the one genuinely stressful hour of the trip. Arrange a private transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Which Santorini hotel has the best private pool?
For the combination of pool, view and service, Grace Hotel Santorini in Imerovigli is the benchmark. For the largest private pools, Canaves Oia Epitome. For privacy and restraint, Perivolas in Oia.
Are Santorini private pools heated?
Some are, some are not, and some are heated only on request or in certain months. It makes a large difference outside July and August, so confirm it in writing for your specific suite before booking.
How much does a Santorini suite with a private pool cost?
Rates vary enormously by property, suite, month and how far ahead you book, and peak August pricing can be several multiples of May. Rather than quote a figure that will be wrong by the time you read it, check live rates for your exact dates.
Is a plunge pool worth the premium over a normal suite?
If you value privacy and the terrace is where you intend to spend your time, yes - it changes how the whole stay feels. If you plan to be out all day and want to swim properly, put the money into a larger suite or an inland villa with a full-size pool instead.
Can you see the sunset from every caldera pool?
No. In Oia almost everything faces the sunset. In Imerovigli and Akrotiri orientation varies property by property and even suite by suite, because the cliff curves. Ask whether your specific suite faces the sunset directly.
Oia or Imerovigli for a private pool suite?
Imerovigli, for most people. The same caldera, a stronger foreground view with Skaros Rock, far fewer people and typically a lower rate for an equivalent suite. We set out the full comparison in our guide to where to stay in Santorini.
The short version#
Decide first whether you want a pool to swim in or a pool to sit in. The cliff gives you the second; inland and the Epitome-style sites give you the first.
Then ask the four questions - size, heating, privacy, orientation - before you transfer a deposit. On this island those four answers are worth more than any photograph.
