Halkidiki: Greece's Best Beach Resorts Are Not on an Island

Three peninsulas on the mainland that most international visitors fly over. If you are travelling with children, this is probably the best week in the country.

The case for the mainland#

Most international luxury travel to Greece follows one of two scripts: Athens plus an island, or straight to the Cyclades. Halkidiki sits outside both, and the people who holiday here are overwhelmingly Greeks, Serbs, Romanians, Bulgarians and Germans who have worked out something the Anglophone market largely has not.

The practical argument is simple. You land at Thessaloniki, drive an hour, and you are at the hotel. No ferry timetable, no island-hopper flight, no 6am transfer to a port. For a family with young children, that alone reshapes the trip.

The landscape argument is less obvious until you see it. Halkidiki is three long fingers of land reaching into the north Aegean, covered in pine forest that runs right down to the shoreline. The sea is shallow, warm and usually flat. It is green, shaded and gentle in a way the Cyclades deliberately are not.

Our callKassandra if the resort is the holiday - the properties there are the reason to come to Halkidiki at all. Sithonia if you want to drive, swim in sculpted coves and see the prettiest part of the region. The Athos leg only if quiet is the actual objective.

Kassandra: where the resorts are#

The first and most developed peninsula, and the location of the properties that have made Halkidiki's international reputation.

Sani Resort is the headline: not a hotel but an estate of several distinct hotels around a private marina, with a wetland reserve, a dozen restaurants and children's infrastructure that is genuinely best-in-class in Greece. Ikos has two properties in the area and essentially invented the premium all-inclusive category that actually works - with à la carte dining, decent wine and a car included for a day.

Away from the resorts, Afytos is a stone-built village on a bluff with real character, and Kallithea is where the nightlife is.

Sani Resort

Kassandra - private estate and marina

Five hotels, a marina, a pine-forest reserve and a beach that runs for kilometres. Sani Asterias is the top tier; Sani Dunes and Sani Club cover different registers. The children's programme is the best in the country and the dining is unusually strong for a resort of this scale.

Sithonia: the pretty one#

The middle peninsula is less built, more forested and considerably more dramatic. The road along its coast is one of the better drives in northern Greece, winding above a sequence of bays.

The highlight is Kavourotrypes, often called Orange Beach - a run of small coves where the white rock has been eroded into smooth sculptural forms, with water that is almost implausibly clear. Nearby Vourvourou has a shallow lagoon and a scatter of small islands you can reach by rented boat, and Diaporos island opposite is a standard half-day.

Sithonia has fewer hotels and more villas. It rewards having a car.

Beyond the beach#

Ancient Stagira, on the east coast, is the birthplace of Aristotle, with the excavated town on a headland above the sea and almost nobody visiting.

Petralona Cave, inland, holds one of the most significant hominid finds in Europe.

Domaine Porto Carras on Sithonia is one of the largest organic vineyards in Greece and does proper tastings.

And the olives: the big green ones sold worldwide as "Halkidiki olives" come from here, and the groves are everywhere inland.

Getting there and around

  1. Fly to Thessaloniki (SKG)

Direct seasonal and year-round flights from across Europe, and a far less congested airport than Athens. The city itself is worth two nights on the way in or out - it has the best food scene in Greece.

  2. Drive, or pre-book a transfer

Kassandra is about an hour, Sithonia one and a half to two, Ouranoupoli about two. The roads are good. Pre-book an airport transfer.

  3. Hire a car for Sithonia, optional for Kassandra

If you are staying inside a Sani or Ikos estate you may genuinely not need one. For Sithonia's coves and villages, you do. Compare hire cars.

  4. Take the Athos cruise and a boat day at Vourvourou

The Athos coastal cruise from Ouranoupoli is the regional set piece; Vourvourou's lagoon and islets are the best small-boat day. Book a cruise.

Frequently asked questions

Is Halkidiki worth visiting for luxury travellers?

Yes, particularly with children. Sani and the Ikos properties deliver a standard of resort infrastructure the Greek islands do not attempt, and you reach them by a one-hour drive rather than a ferry. It is not the place to go for Cycladic scenery.

Which peninsula of Halkidiki is best?

Kassandra for the resorts and the easiest access. Sithonia for scenery, sculpted coves and driving. The Athos leg for quiet and for seeing the monasteries from the water.

How far is Halkidiki from Thessaloniki airport?

Roughly one hour to Kassandra, one and a half to two hours to Sithonia, and about two hours to Ouranoupoli on the Athos peninsula.

Can women visit Mount Athos?

No. Entry to the monastic peninsula has been restricted to men for around a thousand years, and men need a permit arranged in advance. Everyone can take a boat cruise from Ouranoupoli that passes the monasteries from the sea, which is how most visitors see them.

When is the best time to visit Halkidiki?

June and early September. The region is further north than the islands, so the season is shorter - roughly June to September - and August is both the hottest and the busiest, dominated by Greek and Balkan visitors.

Halkidiki or the Greek islands?

Halkidiki for families, calm shallow water, forest shade and no ferries. The islands for dramatic scenery, whitewashed villages and a longer season. If you are coming for a week with young children, Halkidiki is the easier and probably better choice.

The short version#

Fly to Thessaloniki, drive an hour, and let a resort do the work. Take Kassandra if you have children, Sithonia if you want to drive and swim in the prettiest water in the north.

And see Athos from the sea. It is the only way most people can, and it is better from there anyway.
