Zakynthos Beyond the Shipwreck: Where the Good Half Is

The most photographed beach in Greece is here, and so is one of its most misjudged islands. Book the wrong village and you will not recognise the place from the pictures.

Two islands with one name#

Zakynthos has a reputation problem that is entirely geographic.

The south-central strip - Laganas, and to a lesser degree Kalamaki - developed into one of the Mediterranean's best-known young party destinations. It is loud, it is cheap, and it works for the people who choose it.

Four kilometres east, over a low ridge, the Vassilikos peninsula is pine-covered, quiet, and lined with coves. Further north, Tragaki and the hills behind Alykes hold most of the island's serious hotels.

Nothing about the island is misrepresented. But a "Zakynthos beach hotel" booked on price can easily land you in the wrong one, and the two are not interchangeable.

Our callVassilikos for most travellers - the calmest water, the best beaches and far enough from the party strip that it is a different island. Tragaki if you want the newest adults-only hotels and an easy run into Zakynthos Town for dinner.

The cove with the beached freighter on white pebble under vertical cliffs is the most reproduced image in Greek tourism. It is genuinely extraordinary.

It is also only reachable by boat - there is no path down - and the cliffs above it are unstable. Rockfalls have injured visitors, and both the beach and the clifftop viewing platform have been closed or restricted at various points while the authorities assess the rock.

What that means for planning:

  • Do not build a trip around it. Treat it as a bonus if conditions allow.
  • Check the current status locally when you arrive, not from an article. Any article, this one included, can be out of date on this specific point.
  • Boats leave from Porto Vromi on the west coast - the shortest crossing - and from Agios Nikolaos in the north. Morning light is better and the sea is calmer.

The turtles, and doing it properly#

Laganas Bay is the most important loggerhead turtle nesting site in the Mediterranean and is protected as the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. That protection is real and it comes with rules.

  • Nesting beaches close at night during the season. Gerakas and others are off limits after dusk, and nests are marked and fenced.
  • Boats are speed-limited inside the park, and some zones are closed entirely.
  • Do not touch, chase, or crowd turtles in the water, and do not use flash near beaches at night.

Plenty of operators run respectful trips, usually from Keri or Limni Keriou toward Marathonisi island. Choose one that talks about the park rules unprompted; they are the ones who follow them.

Getting there and around

  1. Fly to Zakynthos (ZTH)

Direct seasonal flights from much of Europe, plus connections via Athens. The airport is just outside the capital and close to Laganas, so transfers are short to everywhere.

  2. Hire a car

The island is manageable but the good beaches are spread along the Vassilikos peninsula and the west coast viewpoints are a drive. Compare hire cars.

  3. Book boats from the right harbour

Porto Vromi for the shortest run to Navagio, Skinari for the Blue Caves, Keri or Limni Keriou for the marine park and Marathonisi. Boat hire on Zakynthos.

  4. Give Zakynthos Town an evening

Rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake in Venetian style, with an arcaded main square and a genuinely good waterfront for dinner. Most visitors never go.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Zakynthos for a quiet holiday?

The Vassilikos peninsula in the south-east, or Tragaki and Akrotiri near the capital. Avoid Laganas and parts of Kalamaki unless a young party resort is specifically what you want.

Can you still visit Navagio beach?

Access has been restricted at times because of rockfall risk, affecting both the beach itself and the clifftop viewing platform. It is reachable only by boat when open. Check the current situation locally on arrival rather than planning your trip around it.

When can you see turtles in Zakynthos?

Loggerheads nest in Laganas Bay roughly from late May to August, with hatching from late July into October. Nesting beaches close at night during the season and boat speeds are restricted inside the marine park.

Is Zakynthos good for luxury travel?

On the east coast, yes - the Lesante properties and Domes Aulus are genuinely strong, and villa stock is good value. The island's party reputation comes from a small, specific area that is easy to avoid.

Zakynthos or Kefalonia?

Kefalonia for dramatic mountain landscape, Fiskardo and a quieter island overall. Zakynthos for better hotels at the top end, the marine park and easier beaches. Kefalonia is the more beautiful island; Zakynthos has the stronger places to stay.

How many days do you need in Zakynthos?

Five is comfortable: two for the Vassilikos beaches, one for a Navagio and Blue Caves boat day, one for the marine park and Keri, and one spare for the town and the inland villages.

The short version#

Book Vassilikos or Tragaki, check the specific village before you pay, and treat Navagio as a bonus rather than a plan.

Then spend a morning in the Blue Caves. On the days the shipwreck is closed, that is the trip people end up talking about anyway.
